You mentioned being plowed heavily, and the 1940s. Sounds to me like it could be a more recent item as well- the brace behind the moldboard on a typical plow- brace goes from the frog to the far end of the moldboard. Probably your archaelogical find is twenty years old, but then this entire question might be a ruse by some university student with nothing better to do while everyone else went on spring break........
