Ford LGT145 timing is out

I have a 1977 ford tractor with a K321 series engine. If I set the timing with the static method and gap the points accordingly the tractor runs with a knocking sound. I am wondering if there is a flywheel key and if it could be broke. The mark for TDC on the flywheel does not seem to represent TDC as after the mark goes by the sight window the engine turns harder like it is getting to TDC at that time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
