Shifter Broken in '51 JD B

The shifter lever in my 1951 JD B has come loose and wobbles around. I can't get it in any gear nor pull it all the way out. However, I can see the ball and spring on the end of it. Does anyone know ho to fix this from the top or do I need to pull the transmission cover off? I am stuck, any advice would be graciously received. Thanks, Brendan.
