Can't really answer your question, only offer an opinion. 4 pounds sounds like a reasonable charge to me, I wonder how much R12 it held??
My GUESS is....your expansion valve is either partially plugged or sticking. Did you put on a new reciever/dryer?? I'd do a check of the lines and see if you can feel a temperature variation somewhere except the expansion valve, maybe you've got a restriction in a line.
My dear old mother always said....don't look a gift horse in the mouth...it its cooling and the compressor isn't knocking...enjoy the cool.
