It can be bad seals in the cylinder letting it leak through. Check it by putting in something it can't split and try. Then with it extended to that point, take the hose off the rod end of the cylinder. Now try to split again. If oil comes out of the rod end of the cylinder, the oil is leaking by the piston in the cylinder. If it doesn't, the problem is before the cylinder. You mentioned rod size, but not piston or cylinder diameter.
