Brakes run in oilbath. Usually same fluid as in rear axle housing. As opposed to a "dry brake" where the brakes are not running in oil. Wet brakes are usually smoother and last longer and are more effective. You also don't have to worry about a seal leaking rear end grease on the brakes and causing problems. I know of Ford models with wet brakes for example 6600 and 7700 tractors with close to 10,000 hours on them and never had anything done to the brakes.
