Dave - Before you swap in the old ammeter, check carefully your wiring! Especially between the low (the non-battery) side of the ammeter and the regulator and other electrical loads. A short anywhere in that area will fry the ammeter just like you describe.

Keep in mind also your old ammeter probably has a LOWER current capacity (20 or 30 amps max) than a new one (usually 60 amps). So the fault is probably NOT the new ammeter - unless the ammeter happened to be defective out of the box...
