The shop that I take my alternators to has a test stand with a motor and a belt to the alternator. It uses a resistor bank for amperage output with a analog meter. It also reads voltage output with a analog meter. By reading these two meters, he can tell if the alternator (diodes) and voltage regulator is working properly. (By the way, I use old Delco alternators on my tractors which have the voltage regulator built into the alternator. If it has a bad voltage reg. I have him change it to a one wire voltage reg. to make it simple to wire to the tractor.) So after all is said and done, I would take it to the nearest auto supply store and have them check it for you. When I get a use alternator from the junk yard, I always take it to my friendly alternator repair person to check it out to make sure I don't go through all the work of installing a bad alternator on my tractors. Also here is something I just remembered. My dad had a IH 856 with a delco alternator and the old style voltage regulator and the reg. would cause a lot of static in the radio so we changed the alternator to a newer style with the built in solid state reg. and that eliminated 90% of the static problems with the radio. Just my 2 cents worth and of course all the standard disclaimers apply!!??
