Tim: Assuming your tractor will be a "normal" tractor (a common brand with 20-100 hp), you're going to see 2 basic types of PTO's. These are "regular" and "independent" or "live". A regular pto runs with the clutch--push the clutch in, and the pto stops, let it out, and it runs. These will usually have an on/off lever as well, in case you don't want to run the PTO. In contrast, a live pto will run regardless of whether or not the clutch is in--it usually runs from a lever, and you can turn it off or on without having to depress the clutch. This is obviously a more desireable feature, and one well worth paying extra to get a tractor equipped with it.
