You got some good technical info here. If you want to bale much hay or blow snow, you almost (I say almost! :) _need_ some type of live or independent pto. If you will not be doing either of these, then you can probably get by with any old pto. You do want an overrunning clutch then tho - the $50 item people are mentioning. However, live/independent is _better_. And a tractor with it will cost more. Don't get too hung up on the technical explination of live or independent - if it's confusing, people interchange them all the time. There is a minor difference between live & independent, but it's not much of an issue. Either work well. The big difference is regular pto isn't so handy, is on older tractors, and the tractor only has one clutch. A live/ independent pto (whichever kind) tractor has 2 clutches, which makes it easier and safer to run some pto implements. Some use the foot pedal to easily control both clutches (1/2 down for one, all the way down for both), and some just use a pto lever all by itself to control the whole pto operation. But either come as second nature when you use it 5 hours. :) The big difference is having live/independent, or not having it. You are aware, some of the first tractors to have hydraulics did not have live hydraulics, either? :) Yet another issue...... --->Paul
