We had a dairy in the 50's- up to 45 cows, 110 acres- not much "farming"- mostly grass management and manure spreading. Only tractor dad ever had was an 8N Ford he bought used in '52 for $1,200 (it was a couple years old, I think). Had a loader, and dad always wondered how anyone could get along without one. He didn't much care for machinery- He could keep the Ford running, and I guess he figured it was about as complicated as he wanted to deal with. I worked for the neighbor putting up hay- he had an AC D-14 and a JD 40. Mowed with the 40, raked and baled with the AC. Later traded the 40 in on an Oliver 550D with Freeman loader. I loved that tractor, and I have one that I bought 25 years ago. Put a Freeman loader on it a few years later, and it will be the last one that I sell.
