From one Elden to another Eldon--I spent many hours on the '48 W-6 my uncle bought in the spring of 1950. This tractor was in excellant condition, the orginal rear tires were about 75% remaining tread(Goodrich Silvertown 14-30's). It was our "big tractor" for many years, finally being traded for a 560D Farmall in 1964. The tractor is still in this area and is operational. The W-6 is a nice size standard tractor, powerful, but not too heavy or big in physical size to be excessively clumsy or ungainly. You could do anything with it except plant and cultivate row crops, or mount corn or cotton pickers on it. The only shortcomings of this tractor for me were not having any hydraulics and, not having power steering, it handled a little difficult on plowed or soft ground. I always liked how easy the tractor was to mount and dismount and the cozy platform between the full rear fenders. International Harvester's tractor line of the 30's, 40's and 50's featured the Farmall row crop tractor with their basic tricycle design and the McCormick-Deering(1940-1949) or McCormick(1949-1954)standard or wheatland("W") tractors. The row crop and standard tractors shared common engines and many driveline parts and their sheet metal designs show "family relationship" due to the clever designs of one of the most famous industrial designers of the time, Raymond Loewy.
