Cub overheating

Posted by Andy on March 17, 2003 at 11:49:54 from (66.181.74.2):

I need some advise on figuring out an overheating problem on a recently purchased 48 Cub. I have ran it several times since I bought it with out a problem, even plowed a little snow. A couple days ago I started it just to let it run a while since it was cold and I didn't run it for a few days. After it got warmed-up, antifreeze/water started coming out of the overflow tube. So, since the tractor was newish to me anyway and the water that came out didn't look too green, I decided to drain the system and refill it (although after draining it, the coolant didn't look too bad). I also assumed (yes I assumed wrong) that there was a thermostat in the top of the intake manifold where the top hose came from the radiator, so I took that off too. Speaking of which, I could not recognize any remains of a gasket there. Is there supposed to be one? I put one on it anyway that I had and fit perfectly- I figured that there had to be one there since it would not seal metal to metal. It is slightly leaking leaking there now so I think I need to put a liquid gasket on it?

Anyway, with what looks like a newish radiator, no thermostat, no water pump, what could be going on? I did not take the bottom hose off yet- would a thermostat be placed there? The fan blades look fine and the belt seems good- I could not see any slippage and seems pretty snug. When I refilled the system, I kept the cap off and when it started getting warm it just came up to the point that it flowed out of the overflow tube again, with no apparent circulation.

Please help. Thanks, Andy

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
