You might look into checking account direct debit. I don't know if it's cost effective for small guys.

I do know, the only check, including cashiers check, certified checks, money orders, etc: that can not be stopped payment on is a Federal Bank Draft. On a FBD you have to present the original draft/check to cancel it. All other types a stop payment can be issued without the original.
