You can sign up for a service like telechek, but with your small volume that is probably going to cost you more than the occasional problem child. Simplest thing to do is hold the merchandise till the check clears - if they want it they will make good (many states will allow you to charge a service fee for bounced checks)

Also, I know of several start ups that are using Paypal to accept cards and e-checks. Their fees are a percent or two higher than a regular commercial account, but you don't need a card scanner and all that jazz..
