You have some good advice so far. I have two 550's. One gas, plain jane, and the other a diesel with everything but a loader. Wish I had one. Is the one your looking at a diesel? There were very few made with diesel, LPTO, 3-Pt.,PS, belt pulley, etc.
I'd say 3500-4500 US would be a good price if it is not beat up. Check the power steering and the upright column behind the rad. If there is a lot of oil about the area the ps pump probably will be needing a rework. O-rings, etc. Check the braking ability. If it does not brake well the disc may need replacing. Run through all the gears to be sure there are no clunks or serious whines. Very seldom will you find a tranny on a cockshutt that needs much work if any, if it has been taken care of. If you buy, be sure to drain the rear end and tranny and put in new oil. The 550 with the herc engine is the most powerful in its' class at the Nebraska testing. I've never owned as powerful and gutty tractor for its' size.
An excellent unit and you can get parts from many of the Cockshutt Club members. Pistons for the herc are like chickens teeth, however.
