I have 5 brothers that run 3/4T and 1T trucks (all Ford). All agree that the diesel is the way to go for pulling. But, none agree with the statement of better mileage empty. Two have gas V10s that average around 18 empty and 10 loaded, they also have a 94 1 ton with a 460 v8 that gets 14 (at best) empty and 8 to 11 loaded. The diesels (4) (all 97 or newer) all get about 13 to 15 loaded or empty. They all also agree that if you are only pulling occasionally a gas is better with easier starts and better mileage when driven empty. The one super duty that is universally agreed to be junk is anything with the 5.4 V8, no power, no mileage, no resale and lots of repairs to head gaskets. I personally like my restored '66 1 ton dually with a 390.
