I have tried the procedure you describe and I have had success with it also. I think the key is to take the trailer off and drive the tractor on from the front. It makes for better weight distribution to have the tractor weight more towards the front.
Jerry did not say how far away the tractor was he wanted to get. I think if it was not more than 60-70 miles, I would just drive it home, like one of the other guys said. I was 350 miles from home the last time I hauled a tractor, so this was not an option.
