Tim, if your motor is anything like the old Wisconsin VE4 or VF4, the idler gear rotates on an "idler gear stud" that is retained in the block by a 5/16-18 allen head set screw accessible from the outside of the block. After removing this set screw, the VE4/VF4 manual states to pull the stud out of the block with a gear puller. the puller pictured appears to be nothing more than a 3/8-16 bolt, nut and deep socket of an internal diameter that clears the flanged head of the stud. Don't know if this is anything like what you have but thought I would offer it it case it could help. Rod
