Don't know about the towel, but I was taught to set the hook open end up, theory being hopefully it would throw it at the ground first. Was also told it wouldn't stop there. Was also told that my 80' cable was too long, I KNEW better, being 17 yr old. It made a sound I'll NEVER forget when it snapped pulling trees over. Always listened to Uncle after that, still do.
