Sounds like what happened to my old GM 5.7 diesel when a head bolt broke. Ended up replacing head gasket, and while I was at it, also had a valve job done. That wasn't a fun job in a corn crib in December. Somewhere there's a leak between the cooling system and an area if high compression. Probably didn't help you much, and you probably didn't want to hear this. Good luck!
