Yes, there are different styles of tire chains. If you will be doing most of your work on hard surfaces you will want road chains, these have the cross bars running straight across from the inside of the tire to the outside and will give the smoothest ride and do the least amount of damage to the surface that you are driving on. The other type has cross links that run in an X pattern connected by a ring in the center. these will give absolutely the best results in mud. As for expense, new chains do get pricey. check out some farm auctions in your area. You will just about always find some.
