What Salmoneye said... Of course the first Gulf war was about oil. Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in order to gain control of the oil fields. The "coalition" which was mostly U.S. and U.K., with the backing of the united nations, recognized his actions for what they were and retaliated, returning control of the Kuwaiti oilfields to the Kuwaitis. In addition, in case you hadn't noticed, the U.S. economy is based on oil. (heck, I bought some just this morning) It is in the national interest of the United States to have access to world oil markets and to have low oil prices. I can't understand why working in the national interest is a bad thing. By extension, access and low prices helps the Asian and European economies as well, that's why those countries were on board in the first Gulf war, and it's why many of them are on board now.
