I got to thinking about this some more, and you're comparing the wrong Deere against the 1586. The 4440 at it's factory-rated 130 horsepower would be direct competition for the 1086, not the larger 1586. To that end, you should be considering a large-frame 40 series Deere - such as the 4640/4840. Either of those will walk all over that 1586, as they will have the same features as the 4440, but with much beefier powertrains, and the aftercooled 6466 engine. They will also have more hitch, hydraulic and fuel capacity. If you don't like powershifts, be forewarned that the 4840 was only available as a powershift, at least in the U.S. You can find pretty decent 46s and 48s for not much more than 4440s, due to the popularity of the 4440 keeping the prices up. A 46 or 48 would definitely be the ticket for straight field work. I've seen a 4440 turn 260 horsepower on the dyno, but they won't live long at that level. A 4640 is rated at 155 hp, and will reliably turn 185 or so. The 4840 is rated at 180 hp, and they'll live a long time at 200-210. You'll pay a little more for the Deere, but you'll also have way more tractor. I've ran a lot of 86 series IH tractors, and worked on a few, and they're just not the machine a 40 series Deere is - plain and simple.

Paint is another, the modern acrylic enamels are great for resistance to grease and fuel stains, retaining their shine and they last forever; unlike enamels and lacquers . Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
