If over ballasted then geared down and lugged the ring and pinion could be worn out.Worse with old low grade trans lube full of water. Open the three bolt cover above the pto shaft and look at the r&p with a strong flashlight. A HD r&P fom early 1010's bolts right in and is indistructable.
The 17 to 1 compression "S" series Detroits don't start in cool cold weather without a block heater. Ether just blows gaskets and blowers to bits.
Many have had the front axle casting broken. It is "C" shaped on the rowcrop utility chassis tractors. An impatient operator with a chain wrapped the wrong place around the front axle will bust a $350.00US piece.
The cure, ballast to 4500lbs at most, install 21 to 1 "N" sleeves,pistons,N35 injectors, new valves,new seats,valve guides and a high torque starter with a 1000CCA battery. Use a block heater at 32F or less. Grinding valves and seats just sinks the installed height and makes starting worse instead of better by dropping the compression ratio.
Plenty of 435's in service with knowledgeable operators. None left operational with crude hacks onboard.
