Piston Ring Size

I was replacing the oil pan gasket on my 1964 Ford 4000 diesel and found pieces of the bottom of my number 1 piston in the pan. I am going to overhaul the engine. I have a repair manual, but my question is how do I know what size piston rings to order and how would you measure for rings. This is my first time overhauling an engine. Any help would be appriciated.
