The beauty of steam is being able to burn dern near anything depending on how its set up. Gasoling, diesel, kerosene, propane, natural gas, bunker C, soybean oil, corn, wood, straw, all depends on the burner and fuel delivery system. As for efficiency, it all depends on who you ask. The SACA, (Steam automobile club of America) has some old reprints of the Doble steam car pushing 20mpg while cruising at 70mph+. Then you'll hear about the major auto companies building "experimental" modern steam cars in the 70's, and not being able to get them to perform worth a fig. Kinda makes you wonder, (or then again, maybe it doesn't) why they couldn't accomplish something done several decades before. Imagine the cubic $$$$ to change over all the tooling and infrastructure! As for emissions, also depends on who you ask. The idea of not being able to meet 50 state emissions seems kinda ludicrous, considering that with the proper continuous burner, fuel can be burned much hotter and cleaner than the on and off combustion inside of internal combustion engines. Look at the high efficiency furnaces that don't even need a chimney, just a pvc pipe. Boiler explode you say? Flash boilers, able to come up to operating temp and pressure in 3 minutes or less, have been run to hot and blown in some experimenters cars, without injury. A modern computer control system easily takes care of all the boiler and fireman chores. Anyways, the chance of modern steam cars or light tractors in production is rather remote, even if gas prices tripled. Internal combustion piston engines are getting better and longer lived all the time, with efficiency improving too. Imagine where steam engines would be now if they would have become the prime mover of choice.
