As mentioned before steam engines were slow and required large amounts of fuel and water. They were capable of pulling alot more than a gas tractor at the time. To use one for farming the steam engine was capable of doing alot more work than the average size farmers had work for them to do. Many steam engine owners did custom work such as plowing or thrashing and used them in a saw mill or something like that during the off seasons. It really wasn't compatable for an average size farmer of the time to have there own steam engine. They just didn't farm quit that big and if they done alot of custom work they didn't have time to farm themselves. And since most steam engine owners done custom work, not everyone had to have one. Plowing with a steam engine was probably un-heard of in some area's and more common in area's such as western Kansas in the huge wheat fields.
