the farmers may have had a woodlot to supply the fuel but these things also consumed massive amounts of water, and it had to be hauled to the tractor. also you couldn't just go out in the morning, turn a key, and head to the field. You had to fill the reservoir with water, fill the fire box with wood or coal, and wait for a head of steam to build. very time consuming. I sure do enjoy watching them strut their stuff though!
