I bought some land from an old farmer about 25 years ago, and his place bordered what I bought from him. He told me his two dogs were accustomed to roaming on the property I bought, and he had never seen them bother cattle. "But if they do", he said, "drop 'em in their tracks- you'll be doin' both of us a favor. If you don't have a rifle (I did), I'll loan you mine for the job." So much for sentimental pet owners. They did roam on my place, but always gave the cattle a wide berth.
