It depends on the condition/maintanence of the engine. Does the engine smoke , leak oil , knock , etc.? Detergent oil may loosen sludge , enhancing the above symptoms. Sludge may also plug oil passages , etc.. If useing detergent oil effects the engine , it most likely needs attention/rebuild anyways. Question is , do you want to do it now , or at a planned time? These are possibilities. On the other hand , I have switched and had no problems. Should you decide to switch now , make shure you change your oil frequently for the the first few changes. You don't want that sludge/dirt hanging around inside the engine.
