Been there; done that. Bought a used 1962 Chrysler with the push-button shift (wish they'd bring those back) and never even thought about the previous owner possibly using non-detergent oil. The detergent oil that I put in loosened all of the built-up sludge and plugged the oil intake screen - knocked out the rods before I got the engine shut down.
