His friend might just be talking about cycles and not revolutions. One revolution could equates to two 'strokes' per piston, so he could mean idle rpm/60 and then *2*number of cylinders. There again, if you consider 4 strokes as one complete cycle, the you should divide by 2 instead.
Kinda lotta possible answers to this one - now what exactly was this guy actually referring to?
Also try comparing very old slow running single cylinder machines with todays modern multi cylinder engines and ball game is completely different
