A 6 volt system, properly maintained will start a tractor designed for a 6 volt system....UNTIL you start modifying the engine with high compression pistons, overbore kits, etc. Then it becomes marginal at best EVEN when well-maintained. I have a '49 Farmall M and a '52 SM that have the oversized and high compression M&W sleeve/piston kits. Turning them over in cold weather with 6 volts is a very s_l_o_w process. I dropped 8-volt batteries in them and DID NOT HAVE TO CHANGE the regulator setting on the M! I simply moved the light switch control to the "high charge" setting. Both tractors charge at 20+ amps at half-throttle when the battery is low, and cut back to near zero-charge when the battery has recovered. Lights burn brighter, but don't seem to have a particularly short life. The coils are original, and the points seem to endure the stress pretty well. One of these days when I'm bored and have the time to do it, both tractors will be changed to 12 volts.
