As other's observe it's getting back INTO the US can be the problem! I travel to/from Ontario frequently. Since 9/11 I have carried a raised seal birth certificate and 2 forms photo ID (CDL license and employer ID card). However I have yet to be asked by US Customs to produce any ID. Perhaps guess I'm just lucky - other people I know have been detained and questioned. If you speak with any hint of an accent that might be considered foreign - be ready to produce a passport. Note: There is an article in this morning's paper saying US citizens may soon be required to show a passport to regain entry to the US. Not definite yet, but it is under consideration. A few other tips: Make sure all the registration/inspection stickers on your vehicle are valid and current. Also that your vehicle plates are properly displayed and legible. (Every vehicle passing thru Customs gets it's plate run thru the DMV database as you are being interrogated.) If you have any big ticket items purchased in Canada on board, have a bill of sale proving you are the owner. One final tip: If you have a radar detector, leave it home! Or at least shut it off and hide it if you are visiting Ontario. Radar detectors are banned in Ontario. The OPP can detect powered-up radar detector from some distance. If caught your detector will be confiscated, and you will be required to pay a hefty fine - IN CASH, RIGHT NOW - before you will be permitted to procede.
