I would go with the external tank type heater. Plumb it from the block drain and then put a T where the temp sender goes into the head. Advantages of this type: positive circulation, cheap to install, will guarantee a start. Have a 2000 watt like this on our 1256, it has fired right up, even at 35 below zero! I have a 1500 watt tank heater on my H, takes it about 15 minutes to warm up the block so it starts easily.

I don't like the lower radiator hose type because sometimes the hot water will go into the radiator where it does no good to help with starting.
