Your method will work, if you hit the straps between the cells and do not screw in between the plates and short out the cell. This can be Very bad and I cannot recommend your method. It would also be a low current solution to drop the voltage. If you want to drop the voltage from 12 to 6 volts for an accessory, I recommend getting a voltage divider as spoken of by donlc in his post below. However the poster is wanting to charge a 6 volt battery with a 12 volt charger, different then cutting down a 12 volt battery to 6 volts.
