It may run and charge a 12V battery,for a while. I have seen old 6V Chevrolets converted to 12V using the original 6V generator and a 12V regulator. This is hard on regulators as the fld of the 6V generator needs too much current to reach the 13+ voltage needed to charge a 12v battery. The generators are short lived too as it is being forced to put out twice normal voltage. I would leave it 12V and install an alternator.
