Allen, having been around dozers for a while, (dad owns custom dozing business for 20+ years) farm tractor experience would probably not be very close to dozer work. To make things look nice and do it efficiently it would take some experience. If you still want to buy a dozer, and then resell it, some things you may want to look for: Undercarrige-check for abnormal wear, track guards all in place, tracks aren't hitting the rock guards, rails not riding on the pins, its not like 10 acres will take a lot off the undercarrige, but it may hurt resale value. Torque/Transmission/Rear Ends/Finals-pull the plugs and transmission magnets you want good clean oil with no water, and make sure they are full up to level, on the plugs and magnets fine filings are normal, chunks or gear teeth could indicate problems. Engine-ease of starting, check for blowby, clean no leaks. Hydraulics/Blade-check for quick response and a tight blade, as if you are just starting out running a dozer, you will be futher aggravated by a loose blade. I guess my advice would be to hire it done (there are no cheap repairs on a dozer :) ) Good luck either way on your project!
