Simplest conversion would be to purchase a "single wire" (self-exciting) alternator. Wire it by simply running a #10 wire from the "BAT" terminal on the alternator to the "+" (or "GEN") terminal on the ammeter.

The alternator you've got now sounds like an externally regulated Delco unit. It needs a separate regulator, warning light, on-off switch and interconnecting wiring for it to work. I'd forget about using that one...

Another option is to use a Delco 10-SI internally regulated alternator. Much cheaper than a single wire unit ($10 - $15 at a junkyard; $35 or so rebuilt) However you still need an on-off switch and some interconnecting control wiring for it to work.

You also could use the 12 volt generator you've got. However you will need to find the correct regulator to go with it and wire it up correctly. Otherwise you risk overloading/burning up the generator.

It all boils down to how much do you want to spend and how much wiring you are willing to do.
