Robert, I think the flywheel size is a bit of a 'red herring' here. The larger flywheels will lend towards smoother running - especially with fewer cylinders, but they only give out energy when slowing down. The converse is true, when the engine is accelerating, energy is being 'lost' to the useable output as it is being absorbed by the flywheel.
That big flywheel on an old tractor is rotating much slower than the lighter one on the later higher-revving machine and also the energy stored by flywheels is not an easy/direct comparison.
