Sorry for the hamsters. Was just havin' some fun. A wise guy might say that you have two languages up there, so things will always be confused ('course I wouldn't say that). The point I was trying to make was 1. that not everyone has always believed that God was an Englishman. So you have meters and kilos instead of feet and pounds, plus other guys speaking other languages didn't buy off on Watt's fairly arbitrary 33,000 ft lb / min. Who knows what would happen with Arabian horses on jihad, or if Genghis Khan on Chinese horses (little things, more like hamsters) - had conquered the world. Watt came up with the concept first, but it changed some here and there by local translation. Point 2 was that a horse and an internal combustion engine are similar in that they eat stuff (hay, gas, Diesel fuel) and turn that stuff into workable energy. Things like electric motors and water wheels get their energy from external sources and do work that's somewhat dependent on the amount of engergy supplied them - and they act differently because they use that "pre-digested food". An electric motor, a steam engine and a water wheel get to peak power almost immediately. An engine has to rev up to make max power, and a horse's muscles use bones for leverage, has more power on his back two cylinders, and his muscles get tired. So even honest guys speaking English, using feet and pounds will try to account for those differences and natuarlly come up with a bit of a different rating system for those things over the years.
