I'm trying to figure out who your post was aimed at?? I didn't read anyone saying the deer shouldn't be shot, just that they should be killed out right, NOT gut shot, and I agree!
The origional poster said they were shot with a 22 mag., not a 22lr. There's a lot of difference there. A 22 win. mag. packs a lot more wallop and does a lot more damage than a 22lr. It uses a jacketed bullet that expands more like a center fire bullet.
Now, before you label me as some crazed anti hunter, keep in mind i've hunted in several lower 48 states, takeing numerous animials. I've also hunted in Canada and most of Alaska. I've taken Alaska brown bears and caribou off the Alaska Peninsula, moose from the interior, deer and bears off the coast and Prince William Sound islands, and Dall Sheep from the north slope Brooks Range.
I've lost track of how many poorly shot big game animials i've tracked down for others over the years includeing gut shot animials that were shot with too small of a caliber to start with! (but, useing a bigger gun NEVER makes up for poor bullet placement!!) Some animials lived many days like you said, but all were weak and dehidraded. They didn't apear to be leading a normal pain free life to me! I always took every measure to track them down and finish them off.
I see no reason to shoot deer and leave them to waste in the fields, and i see no reason to feed them to the coyotes either! Any game animial i've ever shot i took what ever means to harvest it for food!
