I've been useing Rotella 15w40 for many years, i buy it 55 gallons at a time. It's good oil, and i put it in all my equipment includeing my diesel pick ups. I change my oil at 100 hours, or each fall in my tractors except my compact tractor that gets 50 hour oil changes. Small gas engines get changed even more often that that, depending on their use.
I've used synthetic oils in the past, but for most aplications i don't think their worth the money. Changeing the oil and filter often is the way to get your engine to last, and that's a lot more important than what brand of oil you use.
