Linda, Have you considered putting a 1/4 top on your trailer. Simular to the ones I have seen on some dirt track race car haulers. Most are fabricateded in their own shops. A 1/4 top would provide the protection while hauling and provide a place to put other essentials you might need while on your trip.
It could be constructed from 1/2in. pipe, or 1x1square tubeing or whatever you want, then covered with a cheap tarp from Walmart to sheet steel or roll aluminum depending on how fancy or plain you want it.
