I think you anwered your own question: "...Ill give the kid this much,he did one heck of a job..." My grandson was driving my little compact JD when he was 8. Started out sitting in my lap, and as he gained experience, in creeper gear on his own as I walked alongside, and in a year or so, on his own under my supervision. Different kids are ready for responsibility at different ages. As was noted below, there are a LOT of "adults" that shouldn't be allowed to drive... Just my opinion, your mileage may vary...
