I think it would be possible to have a nice wedding at your church and not spend $1000. It is a good idea to get a photographer that really knows what they are doing, as you only get one chance (at least you hope!) to get those photos. The minister and organist should not be more than a couple of hundred. A cake, punch and coffee should not cost $200. Flowers can cost as much as you want. The bridal gown can be rented, and other attendants can supply their own clothing or rent them.

Another thought is to commit to a set amount of money that you will contribute to the wedding, and if the couple getting married is not satisfied with that, then let them come up with the rest of the money themselves.

I think that spending a huge amount on a fancy wedding is incredibly stupid, at least for regular people. Unless it is important to you to "put on the dog", save your money for something that will last more that a couple of hours.
