How much noise is to much noise

I was hoping some one could give me some insight on a Diesel engine that is on my B-275, I am kind of new to the world of 43 year old diesel engines . I have a lot of noise from the engine when I first start the tractor , maybe even a knocking sound, and possibly valve popping noise, after the tractor gets warmed up knocking, popping goes away and tractor sounds pretty good. My question is this , is it normal for a diesel to have this much noise? Is this something I should be worry about.
