Thank you for the information. It was helpful. Apparently old diesels were started in a variety of ways: with a cartridge containing gun powder, with a blow torch, with a wad of cotton soaked in a flamable solution, with compressed air, and with a spark plug using gasoline and then switching over to diesel fuel. I could be mistaken, but I believe that an engine using the last technique is called a "semi diesel" because its compression is relatively low. By the way, when the Landini's RPMs are dropped to a very slow idle, you can reverse the direction that the engine turns by advancing the throttle at just the right instant. I had heard of this being done and in fact have read of antique tractors that used this technique to reverse their direction, there being no reverse gear in their transmissions. Really interesting stuff and fascinating to watch! Thanks again for the information.
