V10s make tons of torque, but the torque peak is not at the low RPM of a diesel, which is why some folks prefer the diesel. Diesels can give better fuel mileage than a V10, and diesels can go 300,000 miles or more between rebuilds with proper maintenace and a little bit of care. On the other hand, diesels are more expensive to maintain compared to a V10, and as you pointed out, the diesel commands a huge price premium because lots of people want them.

I have an uncle who does custom hay baling; he uses his truck to tow his tractors and hay equipment. He told me once that if someone does heavy towing on a regular, frequent basis, then the diesel is the way to go; otherwise, the gas engine is fine. His truck has the gas engine in it.
